don't let anything hold you back

Maddy Hill Illustrator Artist Byron Bay

When I started, I was really self-critical. I thought “oh this is really boring and simple”. I had an idea of what I would like to be putting out into the world and I would be disappointed because it wasn’t what I had expected.

But then I realised that other people liked it.

You’re going to arrive at one of those blocks and think “oh that’s not quite right - that’s not how I like it”. And often this is the point where I would stop. I think many artists do. It’s like many obstacles in life - you get there and just want to …. resist it. But if I just keep pushing through and try a different technique or something, it usually ends up looking + feeling right. It’s all part of the process.

I’ve learned that not everyone’s way is the way. As a younger person, you get pulled in lots of different directions. I’ve learned that what feels good for me is what I need to be doing. So, I say just go for it. Don’t let anything hold you back. Don’t feel like you’re not a creative person. Everyone has some sort of creative expression. It’s all just different.
