WHAT IS ART THERAPY?

Art therapy is a powerful + effective practice in which we use specific art exercises to access unconscious thoughts + emotions. It's a way to self-express within a safe and honoured environment. Art therapy is accessible to all, regardless of age, intellect, gender, culture, class + ability… a reminder that art is the universal mother-tongue in which we all speak.

WHAT IS ART THERAPY USED FOR?

Because art therapy is a non-verbal means of communication, we can use it to address myriad conditions + for self-enquiry. It is essentially a tool of self-discovery.

Art Therapy can help:

  • Develop confidence

  • Identify + pursue your purpose

  • Develop a healthy relationship with your creativity

  • Develop personal confidence + integrity

  • Connect with your intuition, motivation, reactions + decisions

  • Improve your understanding of self

  • Process any aspect of the motherhood journey (prenatal, birth, postnatal + ongoing)

  • Process trauma

  • Deal with health challenges

  • Deal with emotional challenges

These are just a few ways in which art therapy can be effective.

*Please note that if you are experiencing trauma, physical pain or psychological stress, it is best to use art therapy in partnership with a psychologist, counsellor or practitioner of your choice. If you are interested to know more or have any questions, please get in touch.

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”

— Carl Jung

WHAT DOES AN ART THERAPY SESSION LOOK LIKE?

The first part of your session will be a consultation, conducted in a comfortable, safe environment. You may also be asked to complete a health history form prior to your consultation and if so, we will go over any relevant key points in your consult.

The second part of your session is an inner journey facilitated by a sound, music or drum meditation. The experience is deeply nurturing and insightful.

The third part of your session is where you make art. Your materials will already be set up, allowing you to remain in a dreamy right-brained state as you create art in your own time, in a space in which you feel totally comfortable.

In the final part of your session we reflect on your experience + intention, as well as identify themes and key points in your art.

“A picture is worth a thousand words.”

— Fred R. Barnard

WHY ART THERAPY?

So often, art and creativity are all about the end result and rarely is the focus on the experience of creating. We are sold the myth that to participate in art, we must therefore be a professional artist - but the truth is that the act of creating is actually a biological requirement of human beings. We are born creative. Carl Jung believed that creativity was the primary language of our psyches, even prior to conceptual thought. Jung also believed that looking at these images in a symbolic way could unlock truths of our unlived lives, leading us towards living fuller, more authentic lives.

When we venture deep into the magic of our creative selves, the journey can be at times unravelling, sometimes surprising, rarely predictable + always fascinating. It is when we find ourselves at one with the divine. When our creative spirit comes out to play, it can unlock ideas and revelations that may have laid inside our psyches like a dormant volcano.

Our stories are waiting to be told through the process of creative expression.

DO I NEED TO BE ARTISTIC?

Hell no. You need zero art know-how; only a willingness to show up + connect to the experience.

“Art is the act of triggering deep memories of what it means to be fully human.”

— David Whyte
