Watch carefully the magic that occurs, when you give a person, just enough comfort, to be themselves ~ Atticus
I always took photos.
I was that person amongst my friends at a party who always had a camera with me. I was always taking photos of people to capture a memory or moment. I think it's because I went to boarding school. I really valued having photos with me of all the people I cared about.
When I look back, I guess I was always destined to photograph people and connections. To create time-capsules of memories for people. If I’m honest, I loved taking photos long before it was considered work.
My work as a photographer has taught me to let down my walls. If I am asking other people to let their walls down, wear their hearts on their sleeves and be open - then I've got to be that person too. I've got to be able to reflect that in my own connections with family, friends and clients. I've got to be able to be vulnerable, open and lead wholly + fully by my heart. If I want that back and if I am to document it for others then I’ve got no choice but to give that.
I was cleaning up my shed the other day and I came across a big box of photographs that needed to be sorted out. I was so excited to sit down and go through an actual box of prints. We live in such a digital age. We don't print enough photos. To me, it doesn't matter whether its blurred or perfectly composed, it’s about the memories in those photos.
Everyone deserves to have their story told. I just want to keep telling these stories through photographing the human element and human connection as I see it. I'm so connected with photographing people now that everywhere I am, even if it’s a beautiful landscape, I feel like there needs to be some human element in there to tell the story + capture a feeling.
